Charlotte man charged in $735,000 scheme to defraud Medicaid - QCity Metro

A Charlotte man is facing federal charges for allegedly orchestrating a scheme to defraud Medicaid of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting false claims for mental health services.

The defendant, Ronnie Lorenzo Robinson Jr., 56, was charged with health care fraud, making false statements relating to health care matters, and aggravated identity theft, Russ Ferguson, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced June 23.

The charges are part of the larger federal effort to root out health care fraud. Medicaid, run jointly by state and federal governments, provides free or low-cost health insurance to millions of low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people with disabilities.

According to the indictment, Robinson was the beneficial owner of a company called The Fisher of Men Project, LLC. Prosecutors allege that he obtained the personal identifying information of medical professionals and Medicaid recipients to submit approximately $735,000 in false reimbursement claims for psychotherapy services.

Federal authorities said the claims were filed “without the knowledge, authorization, or approval of the medical professionals or the Medicaid recipients,” and that the services were never provided. Robinson’s company received approximately $440,000 in payments from Medicaid as a result of the claims.
