Child labor at Dunkin' highlighted in Mass. AG's Labor Day work ... - MassLive.com

More than $500,000 in fines against Dunkin’ franchisees was among the highlights of an annual report released by the state Attorney General on labor law infractions in the past year.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s 2023 Labor Day Report noted multiple cases involving independent Dunkin’ franchises across the state in which store management had violated child employment protections, including by working 16- and 17-year-olds more than nine hours in a day.

They included a $145,000 paid in a settlement last fall by the Westford Group, Inc. “to resolve numerous child labor violations at 14 of the company’s 17 Dunkin’ stores,” the report said.

This spring, the attorney general’s office also issued $150,000 in penalties to Somerset Donut Express, Inc. and over $222,000 in penalties to Courtney Donuts, LLC., for child labor law violations at their Dunkin’ franchises, including for overworking minors and failing to obtain work permits.

In the last fiscal year, which ended on June 30, the Fair Labor Division of the attorney general’s office issued $9.2 million in penalties for labor law violations, according to Labor Day Report. The office also helped more than 11,000 workers win $4.2 million in restitution from their employers.
