Chinese chipmaker YMTC sues Micron in US over ‘false’ claims: report - Global Times

Chinese chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) recently filed a lawsuit in a federal court based in Washington DC, accusing the US chip company Micron Technology of spreading false claims that YMTC's chips pose a threat to US national security, Reuters reported on Monday.

The "defendants published and widely disseminated a portfolio of falsehoods designed to manufacture a toxic narrative depicting YMTC as a national security threat. The campaign maliciously and falsely linked YMTC's standard commercial memory products to military espionage, criminal conduct, and technically impossible malicious capabilities," YMTC said in its lawsuit.

This was not the first time YMTC had taken legal action against Micron over what it describes as false claims or misconduct. In November 2023, YMTC filed a lawsuit against Micron Technology and its wholly owned subsidiary, Micron Consumer Products Group, for infringement of eight of YMTC's patents.

Wang Peng, an associate researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, said that YMTC's legal actions are conducive to not only protecting its own lawful interests, but also helping uphold fair market competition.

Ma Jihua, a veteran telecom industry analyst, also said that chip firms should engage in fair competition and cooperation, rather than trying to smear competitors.

The chip market is big enough for all, and the best path forward for all chipmakers, including those in the US, would be to embrace openness and win-win...
