Church officials accused of implanting false memories in a congregant, allegedly making them believe they were sexually assaulted by their biological father and inducing a false report, have been confirmed innocent by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s Second Division (Presiding Justice Eom Sang-pil) finalized the lower court’s acquittal ruling in December of last year for Lee Mo Jangro, a church elder and former prosecutor, Lee Mo Kwon-sa, and Oh Mo Jip-sa, who were charged with false accusation.
Lee Mo Jangro and others were indicted for allegedly implanting false memories in three sisters in their 20s, claiming they were “continuously sexually assaulted by their biological father,” and prompting the sisters to file a sexual assault complaint against their father with prosecutors in August 2019. They also allegedly induced another congregant to file a false report by implanting the memory of being “sexually assaulted by an uncle.”
Prosecutors argued that after the father of the three sisters, Mr. A, raised suspicions of heresy against Lee Mo Jangro and others, they harbored malice and fabricated false claims to subject Mr. A to criminal punishment. It was found that Lee Mo Jangro and Lee Mo Kwon-sa held significant authority within the church. They were perceived by congregants as individuals with special abilities granted by God, and many followers trusted and followed them unconditionally.
