OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) - A St. Lawrence County not-for-profit is accused of firing a worker because she reported alleged wrongdoing to state investigators.
A lawyer for Brandi Lamay filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court claiming that Citizen Advocates in Ogdensburg retaliated against Lamay “for engaging in protected whistleblower conduct.”
Citizen Advocates operates a mental health and substance use disorder treatment clinic on Park Street.
According to the document, Lamay worked as an addiction counselor and licensed practical nurse from 2021 until 2023.
During her time there, Lamay alleges that her patients did not receive the treatment recorded in their medical charts. She also claims that patients came to her to complain that they were not receiving proper care from Citizen Advocates.
“Based on the growing number of patient complaints, Plaintiff (Lamay) became increasingly concerned that staff members and counselors employed by Defendant (Citizen Advocates) were intentionally entering inaccurate treatment information into patients’ records,” the complaint states.
The document states that Lamay reported her concerns to human resources. According to the complaint, Lamay “believed that Defendant was not going to actually investigate and/or correct any of these alleged issues in good faith.”
