City of Vancouver Trims Facilities Development Team, More Job Cuts Looming - Samfiru Tumarkin LLP

What’s Happening?

The City of Vancouver has eliminated 8 members of the facilities development team — with hundreds of jobs potentially on the chopping block.

According to reports, Mayor Ken Sim is looking to slash approximately $100 million from the city’s $2.24-billion operating budget in the hopes of providing relief to taxpayers and improving efficiency.

“[I’m] absolutely committed to protecting the core services that Vancouverites rely on every single day such as libraries, community centres, roads, community grants, sidewalks, police, and fire-and-rescue,” Sim said in an emailed statement.

“My motion is about making sure we deliver those services by focusing on them…We know there’s room to be more disciplined in how the city operates, and our focus will be on finding those savings without cutting core services.”

However, park board chairperson Laura Christensen argues that the city is “already lean.”

Non-unionized employees in British Columbia (BC) are entitled to severance pay. This includes individuals working full-time, part-time, or hourly.
