NEW CITY - Accusations of funny business with Clarkstown's billing records, made by the town's director of engineering and facilities management, were met with town officials' assertions that the accuser himself had been under investigation for his own shenanigans.
Michael Gianatasio, director of engineering and facilities management for the town, has alleged that he was put on paid leave after raising concerns about financial discrepancies, including bills by a vendor for labor that he said were unsubstantiated.
Within days of media coverage of Gianatasio's accusations, the town's attorney released a statement saying that Gianatasio had been under probe for various misdeeds for a year.
Meanwhile, several residents at the July 14 town board meeting said they wanted answers.
Several said that town officials had still not accounted for key accusations by Gianatasio, which included at least two instances of what he believed to be overbilling by a vendor.
Supervisor George Hoehmann, a Republican, said during the July 14 meeting that he hoped that the town's ethics panel would wrap up its probe soon.
Then Hoehmann hit the political angle: He said that an incident involving the town highway superintendent, a rare Democrat in elected office in Clarkstown, and a company that Gianatasio held a stake in, were "at the heart of the probe."
