The head of the University of Luxembourg’s finance research department will appeal against a decision to remove him from his post, his lawyer told the Luxembourg Times, claiming a violation of whistleblower protections.
The university removed Christos Koulovatianos as the head of the Department of Finance, which forms part of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg, effective 13 May.
“The decision was taken in the context of the broader transformation and renewal process currently underway within the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance following recent leadership changes,” a university spokesperson told the Luxembourg Times in an email.
The so-called restructuring comes after the faculty’s dean, Katalin Ligeti, stepped down at the end of April, following reports of bullying and a toxic working environment. The vice-dean, Arnaud Dupuy, was subsequently removed from office by the rectorate.
Claims against Ligeti include allegations that she sabotaged a promotion procedure of four junior professors at the Department of Finance. A lawsuit is ongoing and information provided by Koulovatianos in support of the four plaintiffs appears in legal documents seen by this newspaper.
“In my opinion, that is one of the triggers why he is now being pushed aside,” Koulovatianos’ lawyer, Stéphane Sunnen, said in an interview.
