In the wake of the expert report commissioned by Scenic Hudson which found General Electric could owe billions of dollars for more than a century of injury to the natural resources of the Hudson river, the corporation is making false claims.
The report revealed GE caused over $11 billion in damage to drinking water, fish and wildlife habitat, as well as to recreational resources in the river. The report also found that additional dredging by GE would stem ongoing injury from the PCBs remaining in the river ,which continue to impact the health and well-being of people and wildlife alike.
GE claims that EPA and the courts have stated that no additional cleanup of the Hudson river is needed. This claim is false and misleading. As the former EPA Regional Administrator overseeing EPA’s cleanup of the Hudson, I am compelled to set the record straight.
While it’s true that GE did “check the boxes” to complete the scope of cleanup work required for the upper Hudson, EPA could not state that the goals of the cleanup had been met. Instead, EPA deferred its determination on whether the dredging GE performed was “protective of public health and the environment” and called for the collection of more data to assess whether the cleanup conducted to date would meaningfully advance the river’s recovery. As EPA contemplates further engagement with GE, we expect the agency will still be unable to state that the job in the upper Hudson is done.
In other words, the jury is still out on this...
