Congress Restores Bi-Partisan Support for Expanding Whistleblower Rights
WASHINGTON—Events surrounding this year’s National Whistleblower Day on July 30 hailed a breakthrough for whistleblowers who have felt threatened by partisan divides and disintegration of administrative agencies that enforce their rights. Since the 2019 Ukraine impeachment hearings, the four-decade bipartisan consensus to protect whistleblowers has been replaced by party line votes. At a National Whistleblower Day luncheon sponsored by the National Whistleblower Center, Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), who co-chair the Senate Whistleblower Caucus, urged restoration of bipartisan support for whistleblowers.
Senator Grassley is the longest-running champion of whistleblower rights in Congress, first elected to the Senate in 1980. He is noted for his leadership in enacting the Whistleblower Protection Act for federal workers, the Sarbanes Oxley Act for corporate employees, and the False Claims Act to fight fraud in government contracts by deputizing whistleblowers to file lawsuits. In his speech and website materials, he emphasized that while he often may not agree with whistleblowers, he will fight fiercely to defend their right to disagree.
