Coos Bay man charged in $6.5B Department of Justice health care fraud takedown - The Register-Guard

The Department of Justice has charged more than 450 people, including a man from Coos Bay, in connection with alleged health care fraud schemes totaling a record $6.5 billion, according to a June 23 news release from the federal agency.

The DOJ alleges the accused submitted false claims to health care programs or participated in opioid use schemes. Prosecutors said at least 90 people in the charged group were doctors or other licensed medical professionals in what the DOJ is calling the 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown.

Cases are set for prosecution in 56 federal districts and 45 U.S. states and territories, according to the DOJ. Two Oregon locals were charged in the District of Oregon.

Mehrdad Gerami, of Coos Bay, is charged in federal court with conspiracy to commit health care fraud in connection with medical sleep study testing, according to a news release from the District of Oregon United States Attorney’s Office.
