The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has moved to reassure parents and learners that public schools will remain open at the end of April, dismissing widespread social media claims of a shutdown as false and misleading.
In a statement, the Department said it had noted with concern the circulation of incorrect information suggesting that schools would be closed next Tuesday (28 April), Wednesday (29 April) and Thursday (30 April).
According to the department, these dates fall within the second school term and are not recognised as public holidays or scheduled breaks.
The DBE confirmed that teaching and learning will continue as normal during this period, in line with the officially approved 2026 school calendar.
The second term runs from 8 April to 26 June 2026, and all public schools are expected to remain fully operational throughout.

The department has urged parents, guardians, and learners to ignore the false claims and refrain from sharing unverified information, warning that misinformation can have real consequences for the education system.
Officials say the spread of incorrect information can disrupt academic programmes, affect school attendance, and create unnecessary confusion among stakeholders.
The DBE has called on the public to act responsibly when engaging with education-related content online and to verify information before sharing it.
