When James Gaddis risked his career and reputation to reveal secret plans to develop some Florida state parks, he didn’t expect to receive awards. But he's getting his first one in Vero Beach Monday night.

A cartographer who made maps for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Gaddis, 41, was fired in August for leaking the DeSantis administration’s “Great Outdoors Initiative,” which would have built golf courses, lodges and pickleball courts on protected habitat.

“I thought, ‘I’m going to do what my conscience dictates, and let the chips fall where they may,’ ” Gaddis told TCPalm.

Almost seven months after Gaddis found the dismissal letter on his Tallahassee townhome doorstep, the Pelican Island Audubon Society of Indian River County is honoring him March 24 with its “Special Recognition, Merit, Appreciation, and Thanks Award.”
