The Department of Homeland Security is extending protections for Yemenis in the US as a protracted civil war continues to displace millions in their home country.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will redesignate Yemen for Temporary Protected Status, according to a notice released Friday. The designation, scheduled to be published in the Jan. 3 Federal Register, allows nationals of the country continuously residing in the US to apply for removal protections and employment authorization for a period of 18 months.
Sixteen countries, including Yemen, are currently designated for Temporary Protected Status. Yemen received an initial TPS designation in 2015.
