DOJ shares results of largest coordinated healthcare fraud takedown in agency history - WZTV

WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Department of Justice announced the "largest coordinated healthcare fraud effort" in the agency's history on Monday.

The DOJ says 324 defendants are being charged for their involvement in healthcare fraud schemes. The DOJ says $14.6 billion in false claims were made.

We are announcing today charges against 324 defendants for their alleged participation in healthcare fraud schemes, involving approximately $14.6 billion in false claims submitted to Medicare, Medicaid, and other healthcare programs."

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz joined DOJ, FBI and DEA officials for a news conference on the takedown.

The fact that it's even possible that you could have $15 billion to play in this endeavor is shameful. But that's how we're being attacked now and it's not done by small-time operators," Oz said. "These are organized syndicates who are designing to hurt America."

Oz says CMS is one of the largest targets of all with these fraudsters, as the agency accounts for $1.7 trillion in disbursements.

"It's a big target on our side and they can pierce the veil of protections by just getting identifier numbers from our seniors or Medicaid recipients or others," Oz said.

The CMS administrator also announced the creation of a CMS Fraud War Room.
