It’s easy to think there’s little point in investigating, analysing, and documenting Donald Trump’s lies now that he has been elected president again. After all, he can continue for four more years to say whatever he wants — falsehoods and distortions included — without much immediate consequence.
Yet, there may still be some value in having a written record, among many others, that can be revisited when there is a need to reflect on what Trump actually does in his role.
Using lies systematically as a tool to gain power is quite remarkable — and quite new compared to the standard political mindset we are used to. That in itself makes it worthwhile to attempt some form of documentation.
We can think of it as a kind of historical record: observing, analysing, and preserving what we witness for the future. Not because the lies themselves will stop, but because understanding how they are used might help us and future generations to better recognise, resist, and respond when truth is deliberately distorted to gain power.
