Drew Responds to Police Controversy, Reaffirms Whistleblower Protections - The St Kitts Nevis Observer

Basseterre, St. Kitts (April 2, 2026) – Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has delivered a firm and measured response to recent public criticism surrounding police leadership practices, while reinforcing his administration’s commitment to accountability through whistleblower legislation.

At the centre of the discussion is the restructuring of the police high command—changes Drew said were necessary after the previous administration declined to appoint a Deputy Commissioner. The resulting expansion, he explained, was deliberate and stabilising.

“After the previous administration did not want to appoint a deputy commissioner… we added an extra ACP. We brought on two new ACPs, a new commissioner, and a new deputy,” Drew stated.

That leadership team, he noted, then undertook an extended period of uninterrupted service to ensure institutional continuity.

“In order to settle in, they stayed on the job consistently for about two years or two and a half years without vacation,” he said—an extraordinary commitment that led to a significant buildup of unused leave.

Drew framed the current situation as one of responsibility rather than controversy.

“One of the things that is concerning is that you don’t want them to burn out,” he said. “We have passed that critical period, and the commissioner and his leadership team were asked to put a plan in place to ensure that ACPs and senior leadership take their vacation responsibly.”
