Former Democratic Party lawmaker An Min-suk was elected as the progressive camp’s candidate for the June Gyeonggi Province superintendent of education election. Candidate An said, “I will become a tool for educational reform with a vision of at least 10 years.” As this primary excluded conservative groups, it appears to reflect the intentions of Democratic Party-leaning voters.
Candidate An is a five-term politician who participated in President Lee Jae Myung’s presidential campaign. However, criticisms have been raised about whether he is appropriate as a superintendent candidate due to various controversies. In 2008, Candidate An received a guilty verdict of a 3 million Korean won fine for allegedly assaulting police during the mad cow disease protests. Since 2016, he has raised suspicions that Choi Seo-won, Choi Soon-sil’s overseas assets amount to several trillion Korean won. The Supreme Court recently ordered Candidate An to pay 20 million Korean won in compensation. Separately, in the first trial of a case where Candidate An was charged with defamation against Ms. Choi, the court sentenced him to a 3 million Korean won fine. Although Candidate An claimed the public interest of his remarks, the court did not accept this.
