OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KOKH) — According to the Office of Management and Enterprise Services, a total of eight tort claims have been filed regarding the termination of former employees at the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
OMES informed FOX 25 that seven of the eight claims were filed on Monday. The other was filed prior to Monday, according to the agency.
The Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute notes that, "A tort is an act or omission that gives rise to injury or harm to another and amounts to a civil wrong for which courts impose liability. In the context of torts, 'injury' describes the invasion of any legal right, whereas 'harm' describes a loss or detriment in fact that an individual suffers."
OMES explained that of the seven claims from fired ODOC employees filed on Monday, three concerned wardens, two concerned deputy wardens, one concerned a chief medical officer, and one concerned a health services administrator.
FOX 25 obtained the tort claim notice of Garner "Luke" Pettigrew, who was the warden of the Joseph Harp Correctional Center in Lexington before his termination on Mar. 7.
FOX 25 first reported on Pettigrew's case in July.
During his interview then, he noted that losing his job, "still devastates me. You know, at my age, I, I need retirement. And... you know, it's just, it's just been really hard."
He described his termination as, "out of the blue," and asserted that he led a distinguished career with the department that spanned 22 years...
