The Secretary of the Commonwealth says election officials in Massachusetts are being flooded with conspiracy-filled public records requests regarding the 2020 presidential election.
Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin said the local election officials have received hundreds if not thousands of requests about voting machines and communications during the 2020 race between Republican incumbent Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden.
Galvin, a Democrat, said the requests are coming from election deniers, mostly supporters of Trump. The secretary said the number of requests is dangerous because Massachusetts election officials should be focused on preparations for the Nov. 8 statewide general election instead of dealing with the records requests, each of which city and town clerks are required to respond to by law.
"These local offices are often very small and, right now, they're working on the November election. Most importantly, what they need to do is be focusing on the 2022 election, not dealing with false claims about 2020," Galvin said. "The requests are coming from people who are really not seriously interested in the information they're looking for. They're just simply looking to poke at people who they don't like and states they don't like, which we happen to be one of. It just is inappropriate."
