Ex-'Love Island' Producers Sue NBC Over Unsafe Work Conditions - Bloomberg Law
Two former “Love Island USA” villa producers said they were unlawfully fired for speaking out about unsafe, discriminatory working conditions in a suit against the show’s production companies, including NBCUniversal Media LLC.
The two season 4 producers named in the complaint, Jasmine Crestwell and Alex Rinks, said producers on the reality dating show discriminated against women of color cast members, particularly a cast member named Sereniti Springs. They said that executive producers pressured female cast members to have sex and “slut shamed” them if they didn’t, according to the Tuesday complaint. And they said the show’s purportedly ritzy villas were unsafe and unsanitary, with “inadequate plumbing and inoperable bathrooms,” among other concerns about the cast and crew’s well-being.
Crestwell and Rinks convened with executive producers to discuss grievances in a meeting the executive producers called a “safe space” at the end of July 2022, according to the complaint. They were both fired two days later. Rinks wasn’t provided a reason, but HR told Crestwell they didn’t want to employ a person “who felt ‘uncomfortable’ on set,” according to the suit.
