Police are investigating Park Chulmin, 36, a former member of the Seongnam International Mafia Group, who raised allegations about President Lee Jae Myung’s alleged ties to organized crime during the 2022 presidential election.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced on the 24th that they are investigating Park on charges of false accusation (false report) for filing a baseless complaint against the president and others. In 2021, during Lee’s tenure as Gyeonggi Governor, Park accused Lee, former Comtrade representative Lee Jun-seok, and five others of having close ties to the Seongnam International Mafia Group, filing the complaint with the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office. The prosecutors’ office transferred the case to the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, which concluded through its investigation that Park’s claims were unfounded and deemed his actions could constitute false accusation.
Then, on the 12th of last month, as Lawyer Jang Young-ha, who jointly raised the allegations about the president’s organized crime ties, received a final guilty verdict from the Supreme Court, police began a full-scale investigation into Park’s false accusation charges. Lawyer Jang, acting as Park’s legal representative, cited Park’s claims during a press conference in October 2021, stating, “President Lee received 2 billion Korean won in exchange for favors to the Seongnam International Mafia Group while serving as Seongnam mayor.” He was indicted for publicizing...
