A FACEBOOK whistleblower has told Irish politicians that their “responsibility to regulate big tech corporations goes far beyond Ireland's borders”.

Former Meta worker Frances Haugen attended a briefing in Leinster House today to discuss the role Facebook played in carrying material inciting hatred against Rohingya people.

Over 700,000 Rohingya people were forced to flee their homes in Myanmar, to escape mass killings, and are now living in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

Last year a group of young Rohingya refugees submitted a complaint about Facebook Ireland to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The complainants are seeking remedy from Meta - the parent company of Facebook - for the role it played in fuelling genocidal violence against the Rohingya community in 2017.

The complaints were made to the OECD Irish National Contact Point as Meta's European headquarters are in Ireland.

The briefing, chaired by Labour Party TD Ivana Bacik, and co-hosted by Labour Senator Marie Sherlock, heard about the complaint made by 16 Rohingya youths and women.

One of the complainants, Sayedullah said: “The contributions of Facebook have created hell for us. I will not give up, I will fight and will inspire people continuously to fight against the human rights violations of Facebook.”

Haugen also reiterated her previous call to Irish legislators to take the responsibility of holding big tech corporations accountable more seriously.
