Fact Check: False Claims of Delhi Metro’s Price Hike goes Viral; Photo from 2017 - DFRAC ORG

Claim

The National Capital Territory of Delhi went to poll on 5 February 2025 and on 8 February 2025 the result was declared. BJP won the polls in Delhi and is returning to power in Delhi after a long gap of 27 years.

Users on social media are spreading misleading and false claims in this background.

Amid this backdrop, some users on social media are stoking apprehension in the minds of the citizens of Delhi and those who are a regular commuter of the Delhi Metro.

One such user on X, has posted: “Troubles has started for Delhi as BJP has increased the fares of Delhi Metro. New gifts from the new government.”

Fact Check

To investigate the claims made on the viral post, DFRAC conducted a reverse image search. The photo used by the social media user in his post is an old image from a 2017 report by NBT (Navbharat Times).

This 2017 report by NBT discusses the fare hike of Delhi Metro in that year. However, it is outdated and has no connection to the 2025 fares following BJP’s election victory in Delhi.

To further the investigation, the DFRAC checked Delhi Metro’s official Twitter (now X) handle. A post made on February 12, 2025 clarifying that the viral claims on social media have no merit in them. The post, also, informed us about an independent Fare Fixation Committee which has the power to revise the fares of Delhi Metro.
