The post shared on social media contains false claims about climate change, renewable energy and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The author claims that former South African President Jacob Zuma “rejected the Paris climate accord”. However, South Africa signed and ratified the agreement on 22 April and 1 November 2016 respectively. Zuma praised the agreement in a statement: “The agreement presents a big step forward in committing all countries to act decisively against climate change.”
The claim that Zuma was removed because he was an “impediment to the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)” is also false. Zuma resigned on 14 February 2018 after the African National Congress issued him an ultimatum to either resign or be recalled. This followed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s victory over Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for ANC president in December 2017. The JETP was announced in November 2021.
The claim that Zuma “fixed” load shedding is false. Data from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research shows that load shedding occurred before, during, and after Zuma’s terms as president. Load shedding has, however, worsened since 2018.
The claim that the load shedding crisis the country is facing is because of a “net zero carbon solution” is also false. Eskom, the national energy utility, has denied that load shedding is linked to renewable energy.
