Family of man falsely linked to Charlie Kirk shooting faces online threats, asks public to stop spreading misinformation - WFAA

Zachariah Qureshi, 25, was questioned by the FBI but released; law enforcement says he is not connected to the Kirk murder. His mother resides in North Texas.

DALLAS, Texas — The family of a Utah man wrongly linked to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is asking the public to stop spreading false claims online.

Zachariah Ahmed Qureshi, 25, was taken into custody as a person of interest shortly after Kirk was shot and killed during a rally at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 in Orem. He was later released, and law enforcement has publicly said there is no evidence tying him to the killing.

That came after FBI Director Kash Patel had announced that a subject responsible for the shooting was in custody. Patel then advised that the subject, Qureshi, had been released after interrogation.

While Patel didn't name Qureshi, the Utah Department of Safety did in a news release clarifying that he had been questioned and let go. Before that, Qureshi's name made it onto the platform X, where social media users posted a photo of his student ID from BYU per family and details from his LinkedIn page after he was identified by at least one major media outlet as being a person of interest in custody.

His family then said their address could be easily found online.

Qureshi graduated from a high school in North Texas. His mother and other close family members still reside in North Texas.
