Feds: Multiple residents of Oakland and Wayne counties face fraud charges - Dearborn Press and Guide

Nearly two dozen Michigan residents, including health care providers from Oakland County, are facing federal charges for two alleged schemes to defraud Medicare of more than $61.5 million.

According to the Department of Justice, the schemes involved kickbacks, bribes and billing for services that were unnecessary and never provided.

Among the 23 people implicated in the schemes are Oakland County residents Walid Jamil, 62, and Jalal Jamil, 69, who owned and operated several home health agencies in the Detroit metropolitan area. In the case United States v. Jamil, et al, it’s alleged the two concealed their ownership interest in the business by using family members and other associates as straw owners, and submitted approximately $50 million in fraudulent home health care claims to Medicare.

Walid Jamil and Jalal Jamil are accused of paying bribes to co-conspirators to recruit patients — in violation of the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute — who didn’t need home health care and didn’t qualify for it under Medicare rules. And the patients, in many instances, didn’t receive the care for which Medicare was billed, according to the DOJ.
