The U.S. Department of Labor has fined the owner of a Slim Chickens franchise in Avon more than $15,000 for illegally employing minors.
In a news release, the Labor Department said Ohio Slims LLC and its owner/operator, David Giesen, failed to correct illegal child labor practices at the Avon restaurant "despite being warned in September 2021 that the hours worked by 14- and 15-year-old employees" at another franchise in Streetsboro in Portage County violated federal law.
Ohio Slims LLC and Giesen "continued the illegal practices for several months at a second location in Avon," according to the Labor Department. The company and Giesen have paid the full $15,504 fine and agreed to comply with child labor laws, according to the Labor Department.
Investigators discovered that 15 minors were assigned to work hours at the Avon location in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act, after similar violations were found at the Streetsboro restaurant in 2021. The Avon location opened at 1822 Nagel Road in 2021.
"Specifically, investigators found — on more than 330 occasions — the employer allowed minors to work later than 7 p.m. during the school year or after 9 p.m. between June 1 and Labor Day," according to the Labor Department news release.
