A former OceanGate employee, who had flagged the experimental submersible Titan as unsafe prior to its fatal voyage, testified Tuesday that the tragedy could have been avoided if a federal safety agency had acted on his complaint.
David Lochridge, OceanGate's former operations director, expressed disappointment in OSHA for not investigating his concerns. "Had OSHA investigated the serious issues I raised, this tragedy may have been prevented," he said while addressing a commission investigating the Titan's implosion during its mission to the Titanic wreck, which killed all five aboard.
Lochridge testified that eight months after filing his complaint, OSHA had not started investigating, citing a backlog of 11 cases ahead of his. By then, OceanGate had sued Lochridge, and he had countersued. Ten months later, he withdrew the complaint, and both lawsuits were dropped.
