JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida legislature advanced a new bill that would loosen child labor laws.
This bill would allow children as young as 14 years old to work overnight shifts if they are homeschooled.
If the new law is approved, 16 and 17-year-olds would be able to work more than eight hours a day on school nights and 30 hours a week while in school.
Governor Ron DeSantis has acknowledged that the state and White House efforts to remove undocumented immigrants may have reduced the workforce for lower-wage jobs.
However, the governor pointed to young workers as a potential solution.
“This is about trusting parents—not the government—with decisions about their kids. This bill gives families the freedom to decide when their teenagers can work, while still keeping basic guardrails in place," Senator Jay Collins, who drafted the bill, told First Coast News in a statement.
“As a mother, I feel like it’s detrimental to our children. They need rest. They need time to do their work. They need downtime to have a childhood,” Allison Vaughan, a business owner in Jacksonville and a mother of two, said.
Michael Miller, a father of three, however, believes teenagers who work more hours will develop a stronger work ethic.
