A late bank robber turned social media influencer was allegedly part of a group who encouraged people to make false claims of historical child abuse in order to access government compensation.
Police this week arrested seven so-called 'claims farmers' who allegedly approached adults that were former public school students or youth prison inmates and helped them lodge false claims for a cut of the money paid out.
One of the alleged participants in the alleged fraud scheme was the late Russell Manser - an ex-criminal who found a large social media following by detailing his former exploits.
Manser died in March 2024. Among the seven arrested this week under Strike Force Veritas was Manser's son, Queensland-based 23-year-old Ky Manser, The Daily Telegraph has reported.
He was charged with one count of publishing false misleading material to obtain advantage, and will be required to front Downing Centre Local Court on March 25.
Among the six others arrested were a 55-year-old man from Girraween, who is accused of being a major figure in the scheme and was charged with 21 offences.
A Granville woman, 53, Pendle Hill man, 32, Gladesville man 42, Horsely woman, 52, and a Pendle Hill woman, 35, were also charged.
Police believe the group stood to gain about $3.75million if the allegedly false claims of historical child abuse had been paid out.
