Former Catskill student claims in lawsuit she was bullied over false claim that she reported infamous duct tape incident - WNYT.com

A former Catskill student is suing the district, claiming that she was bullied in the drama club during the high-profile controversy when duct tape was placed over another student’s mouth.

Molly Osswald filed a lawsuit on Aug. 12 in state Supreme Court of Greene County, claiming that school staff body shamed and bullied her.

Osswald alleges that the derogatory comments about her appearance were made by staff member Marcus McGreggor during a play rehearsal in February 2023. She reported that behavior to district staff and other unprofessional behavior came to light.

Osswald participated in another musical play the following year. In March, news surfaced that staff member Michelle Storrs-Ryan had told students to put tape on their mouths to get them to stop talking. One student jokingly complied.

Storrs-Ryan and then-Principal Junait Shah were suspended at that time. The suspension prompted a wave of heated rallies and protests by students and parents at school board meetings that spring. The district had to postpone the musical “Cinderella” in the wake of the controversy.

Osswald said McGreggor publicly identified her as the student who had reported the duct tape incident during an interview with NewsChannel 13 at one of the meetings. However, Osswald said the incident happened on Feb. 15, and she was out of school from Feb. 6 to Feb. 16 for a medical issue.
