Former deputy faces federal lawsuit after bogus drug arrests - cw34.com

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A former Martin County Sheriff's Deputy, fired over questions about the evidence he used for a number of arrests, faces a new legal battle.

Attorneys Lance Richard and Jordan Wagner have filed an extensive 59-page complaint in the US District Court against the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and former Deputy Steven O’Leary who was sentenced to 13 years in prison last week for making false drug arrests.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 14 victims, alleges multiple civil rights violations by the Sheriff’s Office and its former deputy. The newly-filed federal lawsuit makes claims of wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and other claims against the Martin County Sheriff's Office and former Deputy Steven O'Leary for fabricating drug evidence.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Steven O'Leary in July 2019 on 17 counts of obstruction of justice, 9 counts of making false statements, 13 counts of tampering with evidence and 13 counts of false imprisonment.

The sheriff's office fired O'Leary after an investigation showed at least 14 instances involving a suspect's arrest on narcotics charges and the substances turned out to be something other than drugs.
