Former employees claim toxic culture, as state school board weighs superintendent's future - Fox Baltimore

(WBFF) — The Maryland State Board of Education has an important decision to make in the next two months. Will the board members extend or end the State Superintendent’s contract?

Mohammed Choudhury’s current contract ends in 2024. He’s yet to publicly say whether he wants to stay on the job, but with the board’s decision nearing, many people are speaking out about the culture at MSDE.

“Governor Moore has promised the best in state government,” said Robert Eccles, a former MSDE employee, who spoke publicly during the May 23 State Board of Education meeting.

In his public comments, Eccles went on to say, “The ongoing unacceptable practices at MSDE further embarrass the whole state and his administration.”

Eccles testified that 10 former MSDE employees recently wrote letters to the board calling for an independent investigation into what he called a toxic workplace culture.

During the hearing, Eccles, who worked as a specialist for the department that certifies teachers and other personnel, described what he says he witnessed while working under Choudhury.

“Agency leaders and staffers have been disempowered,” said Eccles. “MSDE leadership is unwilling to accept counsel from experienced staff.”

Eccles added, “The massive exodus of staffers across the agency is unprecedented and self-inflicted.”
