Paulo Roberto Costa, a former Petrobras downstream director and one of the first whistleblowers in the infamous Car Wash corruption scandal that rocked the Brazilian oil and gas industry nearly a decade ago, has died from cancer.
Costa, who served as a Petrobras director from 2004 to 2012, was sentenced in early 2014 to more than 70 years in prison in graft cases related to the Car Wash investigation.
However, after being in jail for only two months, the engineer started serving his sentence in a semi-open regime after signing plea bargaining agreements to provide details about the corruption scheme within Petrobras.
