Gilbert + Tobin, DLA Piper defy slump in law firm taxpayer work - The Australian Financial Review

Gilbert + Tobin and DLA Piper surged up the rankings for government legal work in 2022-23, while rival King & Wood Mallesons took a tumble after two years dominating the field.

Usually government-work shy G+T leapt from off the charts to 12th place with a $5.8 million contract to assist the robo-debt inquiry, and DLA Piper moved from 11th place to eighth by doubling its competition work.

Moving in the opposite direction, KWM went from top billing to sixth with $17.3 million in work, down 55 per cent year-on-year.

KWM was coming down from a high-water mark, having inked a $24 million deal in FY22 to assist the Defence and Veteran Suicide Royal Commission, and an $11.7 million deal in FY21 to represent the Department of Defence in the class action alleging negligence over its use of toxic PFAS chemicals.

No. 1 spot in 2022-23 went to Clayton Utz for the first time in two years, but the coup was more a technicality than a billing bonanza, as taxpayer spending on outside legal advice fell for a second straight year.
