Gov. Tom Wolf wants to boost pay for Pa. tipped workers. Here's what he proposed - GoErie.com

Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday proposed new regulations that would increase tipped workers’ base monthly pay in Pennsylvania and again urged leaders of the Republican-led Legislature to increase the state’s minimum wage.

Wolf said that the state Department of Labor & Industry will propose regulations that would increase the amount in tips a Pennsylvania worker must receive monthly — from $30 to $135 — before their employer can reduce their hourly pay from the state's minimum wage of $7.25 per hour to $2.83 per hour.

“American workers are demanding better quality jobs,” Wolf said. “People want higher pay for their hard work, fair paid time off and safety on the job.”

It was the second announcement in a month concerning workplace improvements by Wolf, and another one to work around the GOP-led Legislature, which has not supported minimum wage increases above the federal $7.25 an hour.

Wolf said on Oct. 21 that he was issuing an executive order to ensure that companies receiving state grants and tax breaks would pay workers at least $13.50 per hour and provide paid sick leave.

Wolf also urged Republicans last month to pass Democratic bills offering workers paid sick leave, saying that there are 400,000 workers in the state who lack the benefit.

Additionally, he directed the Labor & Industry Department to study applying Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards to offices under the governor’s jurisdiction.
