Heightened focus on worker protections calls for businesses to review employment contracts - Insider Media
Legal experts have stressed the importance of acknowledging the broader implications of the Employment Rights Bill, which was introduced in October 2024 as part of the first phase of delivering the Labour government’s Plan to Make Work Pay. It will take effect in autumn 2026 at the earliest.
“Given that the Bill is heavily focused on strengthening worker protections, businesses will need to revise employee contracts, internal policies and improving conditions,” says Sam Pawson, head of employment law at Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors. “Maintaining open communication and transparency with employees throughout these transitions will also be crucial. Clear dialogue can help ease concerns, build trust, and foster a collaborative approach to navigating these changes effectively.”
The role of HR in employment law has undeniably evolved in recent years. “The increased focus on employee wellbeing and the shift to remote working have fundamentally changed the way employers interact with their workforce,” says Pawson. “The rise in workplace wellbeing initiatives, such as menopause training and terminal illness support, has highlighted the need for more specialised policies that reflect the diverse needs of employees.
“This is where employment law plays a crucial role in ensuring these policies not only align with best practices but also comply with statutory obligations.”
