At-Will Employment

In states with at-will employment, an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason, except an illegal one, or for no reason without suffering legal liability. Likewise, employees are free to leave a job at any time for any or no reason with no adverse legal consequences.

Even if your state has at-will employment laws, exceptions may apply. For example, some states have public policy exemptions, where an employee can’t be fired for refusing to break a law. Other states have implied contract rules, which can prevent employers from terminating workers without just cause. If you fail to comply with local regulations, you may be at risk for a wrongful termination lawsuit.
