Hotel bosses forced to deny claims they will house asylum seekers - Kent Online

A hotel has denied claims it is set to house asylum seekers after "false” and “unfair” posts were shared on social media.

Bosses at the Holiday Inn in London Road, Sittingbourne, dismissed the rumours that were spread online yesterday.

Holiday Inn Sittingbourne manager Chamil Almedia told KentOnline today how damaging the “unfair” allegations can be for the business.

The 44-year-old from Maidstone, who has been working in Sittingbourne for two years, said: “Even I was surprised when my team contacted me about the posts.

“We are a fully open hotel and are even promoting our Christmas parties and events.

“Anyone who wants to visit us can.

“We had a few people email and call us about it, but the message quickly spread.

“It can be harmful for the business and also the team that is working here.

“They live within the local community and have neighbours and people asking them about it.

“I can understand the concern that there is within the community, considering what is going on in the country, but the posts were unfair.

“One of the main ones was taken down, but the damage was already done.

“I am not sure whether we can take further action. We explained everything on social media and answered questions from the community.”

The hotel took to social media last night to deny the claims just before 5.40pm.

It said: “You may or may not have seen the comments flying around Sittingbourne gossip boards about us. We would just like to confirm that business is open as usual.
