On September 1, 2022, United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement about Federal legislation under consideration called the “American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA)” and said the Act “does not guarantee the same essential consumer protections as California’s existing privacy laws.”
House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA-12th District) said in the statement that “Governor (Gavin) Newsom, the California Privacy Protection Agency, and top state leaders have pointed out the American Data Privacy and Protection Act does not guarantee the same essential consumer protections as California’s existing privacy laws.”
Introduced by Committee on Energy and Commerce Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ-6th District), the ADPPA (H.R.8152) would establish requirements for how companies, including nonprofits and common carriers, handle personal data, which includes information that identifies or is reasonably linkable to an individual.
“The Energy and Commerce Committee is to be commended for its work on federal data privacy legislation. Importantly, Democrats won the right for consumers for the first time to be able to seek damages in court for violations of their privacy rights,” House Speaker Pelosi said in the statement.
