Amid rising use of reference houses and fake job postings, it is becoming harder to spot applicant lies

Online forums, fake CVs and reference black markets are making it easier for prospective job applicants to falsify their employment history.

One in four people have lied about employer references, according to research by Standout CV, with 18.5 per cent of this group having used fake reference services, sometimes involving paid actors pretending to be employers.

Online forums are also contributing to the problem. A Reddit page called BeMyReference has 56,000 members and is used by people to request job references from other people in the online community.

Commercial reference houses, such as CareerExcuse, offer paid-for professional references, verification of employment and even company email addresses and websites to support people’s applications.

Stricter immigration rules and fewer skilled roles have also contributed to an increase in falsified documents, with some migrants reportedly paying for fake jobs to secure UK visas, according to a recent investigation by The Times.
