How forced labour laws redefine responsibility in apparel supply chains - Yahoo

TradeBeyond, the retail supply chain management solutions provider, has released its retail sourcing report titled “Building a Future of Ethical Sourcing,” offering a clear view of the risks, realities and opportunities associated with forced labour, including global regulatory frameworks and due diligence practices.

Walk Free estimates that more than 50m people are living in modern slavery, with 27.6m enduring conditions of forced labour. Nearly 40% of these individuals are women and girls, and 12% are children overall.

Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index reports that the Asia-Pacific region accounts for the highest number of cases, driven by demand for low-cost production in markets such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China. Other hotspots include the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Latin America, where migrant labour and informal economies dominate.

“Modern slavery is a risk to almost all supply chains,” said Laura Rainier, senior director analyst in Gartner’s Supply Chain Practice. “Rooting out the practice requires visibility into multiple tiers of suppliers and a willingness to address issues in areas of the supply chain that traditional due diligence processes often fail to reach.”

Global forced labour regulations

Legislation is fast becoming the key driver of change, with governments across North America and Europe pushing for mandatory due diligence and supply chain accountability, signalling a shift from voluntary ethics to legal enforcement.
