Huntingdonshire Reform councillor disputes alleged ‘false statements’ claim being investigated by police - Peterborough Telegraph

A recently elected Reform UK district councillor has hit back following reports he is being investigated by police.

Cambridgeshire Police recently disclosed that they are looking into claims surrounding the nomination papers of Reform UK councillor, Ryan Coogan, who was elected to the Ramsey ward following the recent Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) local elections:

A police spokesperson said: “We are investigating an allegation of false statements on a candidate nomination paper and the investigation is ongoing. This relates to Ryan Coogan and May’s HDC elections.”

Councillor Coogan has disputed the claims:

“To my knowledge there are no false statements in my nomination papers – they were checked, clarified and approved by the returning officer, to allow democracy to take place,” he said.

“The police have not released any detailed info to me about what has or has not happened, or what the complaint is or is not,” he said adding, “they have refused to give me any information or clarification as to what this investigation is for.”

Huntingdon District Council has said it is “aware” of a police referral in relation to the recent District Council elections.

“As this matter is a live investigation, it would not be appropriate for the council or the Returning Officer to comment further at this stage,” a spokesperson said.
