IEC debunks fasle information during voter registration weekend - EWN

While the voter registration weekend was aimed at getting eligible South Africans onto the voters' roll, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) also used the opportunity to debunk false information.

In May, the electoral body announced plans for a draft code of conduct on misinformation to tackle the spread of false claims.

Eyewitness News spent time in Soweto on Sunday, where residents visited voting stations to register for November's municipal elections.

There, we found that one of the IEC's most persistently debunked claims remains widespread. This is the belief that people who do not vote automatically hand their vote to the largest party.

The IEC has repeatedly dismissed this as untrue, saying abstaining from voting simply means a person has chosen not to take part in determining the democratic outcome.

The IEC continues to urge all eligible voters to participate in the democratic process and make their voices heard when South Africans head to the polls on 4 November.
