Delhi Police have arrested Karambir Sejwal, 71, the owner of the in Delhi’s Saket area, killing six people and injuring eight others. The arrest came amid allegations that illegal construction work led to the tragedy, as per reports.
Karamveer, the accused, is the owner of the building in Saidulajab near the Saket Metro station that came crashing down on Saturday, killing five medical and engineering graduates and a canteen owner. It housed a coaching institute, cafes and offices, and construction work was underway on its uppermost floor at the time of the collapse, officials told news agency .
The building collapse triggered an intense rescue operation. According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), seven people were rescued by emergency teams with assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and other agencies. Two others were rescued by local residents.
Police told that Sejwal had been missing since the building collapsed and was traced to his farmhouse in Green Avenue, Church/ Mall Road in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. His family owns several properties in the Saidulajab area, which it has rented out to businesses and individuals.
Police said the family likely has powerful political connections. A signboard at the entrance of the lane where the collapsed building stood reads “Zaildar Estate”, believed to be linked to the family.
