Gordon Debono is calling on police to identify the person within the Office of the Prime Minister who started false claims that Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered because of fuel smuggling.
Debono and his wife Yvette are currently charged with money laundering. Debono has long been linked to fuel smuggling along with Darren Debono (no relation). He has been in the news before, particularly after Malta’s courts gave the green light for a 2.8 million transfer between their offshore accounts.
Debono, who has pleaded not guilty, has now claimed his prosecution was premeditated by people with political connections.
Reports that someone within OPM leaked false claims to the press soon after her assassination are nothing new, with Malta Today managing director Saviour Balzan expressly saying that then-OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri leaked the information.
The false claims were splashed over front pages, particularly on Malta Today and Times of Malta, which published the allegations.
“[The rumour was issued to] exonerate or keep under wraps the people who were truly responsible or those with an interest in this case,” Debono said.
The issue even made its way to the public inquiry into the assassination. However, the issue has never been properly looked into.
Schembri has long faced allegations of being involved in the murder itself, but several people have hinted at him at least playing part in trying to cover up the murder.
