Is AI accelerating ‘invisible’ ageism in recruitment? - Personnel Today

A viral campaign has highlighted the role of AI in creating and accelerating new forms of age discrimination in recruitment. Employment lawyer Emma O’Connor outlines the legal risks and how employers should respond.

The recent, viral Stacey Duguid campaign has brought a difficult workplace issue into the headlines and LinkedIn posts.

Stacey, a hugely experienced and accomplished fashion editor, documented her experience of becoming seemingly “unemployable” in mid-life, as hundreds of job applications went unanswered.

As she shared her story on Instagram, thousands of women responded with similar experiences of being structured, aged out, nudged and effectively “AI’d out” of the workforce.

What first looked like an individual case revealed a much broader trend: that AI-driven recruitment tools were amplifying age bias for this part of the female workforce.

The question for employers is whether AI recruitment tools are creating, and accelerating, a new, invisible form of age discrimination and if so, what are the legal risks, and what does this mean for HR and recruitment teams?

An overlooked talent pool

People are working longer. While this shift in workplace demographics should make mid-life workers an experienced and desirable pool of talent, many are being filtered out before a recruiter ever sees their application.
