It’s National Whistleblower Day and OSC is recognizing some public servants - Federal News Network

  • In honor of National Whistleblower Day, the Office of Special Counsel is recognizing two federal employees with outstanding public servant awards. The two whistleblowers who earned this year’s award come from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The employees had reported over 50 active mines in the Pacific that hadn’t been inspected since 2016 due to a clerical error. From the whistleblowers’ actions, it became clear that the agency had incorrectly classified the mines as abandoned and inaccurately reported complete inspections. OSC’s whistleblower awards are issued each year in celebration of the first whistleblower protection law, dating back to 1778.
  • The Technology Modernization Fund Board quietly made a new award. The Federal Trade Commission is slated to receive $14.6 million to modernize its in-house data processing capabilities and improve the way it analyzes data used in its investigations. The TMF Board made its third award to the FTC on Tuesday. The agency will use the extra IT modernization funding to develop a cloud-based analytics platform that uses artificial intelligence tools. The FTC also will use the funding to train staff to handle data analysis in-house. The FTC says these new tools will enable the agency to reduce the amount of time it takes to sift through data from weeks to hours.
