JACKSON, MI - An attorney who will handle an investigation into allegations of racism and harassment at Jackson College was selected by trustees Wednesday night.
A motion to enlist attorney Leigh Schultz to handle the investigation passed unanimously during an Oct. 25 meeting of the Jackson College Board of Trustees.
Schultz is a member of Miller Johnson law firm, based out of the firm’s Kalamazoo office. Her practice is focused on employment and labor cases.
Other lawyers who were up for consideration Wednesday were Lisa Snel from the Thrun law firm and Bill Thacker from Dickinson Wright. The list of potential attorneys was compiled by Bill Abbott - a lawyer who works on behalf of the college board.
The decision to seek an independent investigator to look into the issue was approved during an Oct. 19 special meeting.

Board vice chair Sheila Patterson had some concern about using Thrun to handle the investigation. Though Thrun has a long history of handling cases dealing with Michigan’s educational institutions, Patterson said some people have come forward to her expressing apprehension about using a firm that’s so ingrained into higher educational culture.
